De Vos Group


             


The De Vos group is part of the Centre for Surface Chemistry and Catalysis (Centrum voor Oppervlaktechemie en Katalyse; COK), a large interdisciplinary team (> 120 people) involved in research in the chemistry of the solid-gas, solid-liquid, and solid-solid interphases. The group currently consists of 6 post-doctoral researchers and 22 PhD students under the wings of professor Dirk De Vos.

Within this context, we aim to develop new concepts for catalysis and adsorptive separations. Our research specializes in porous materials (mainly metal-organic frameworks and zeolites) and their interaction with organic molecules. We use a variety of characterization techniques such as gas sorption analysis, x-ray crystallography, solid state NMR/EPR and in situ characterization of molecular interactions using microspectroscopy (FTIR, SHG and fluorescence mapping).

General

Dirk De Vos, born in Mechelen (Belgium) in 1967, is currently a full professor and head of the department for Microbial and Molecular systems at the KU Leuven in Belgium. After finishing a PhD in Leuven with Prof. Pierre Jacobs on the inclusion of metal complexes in zeolites, he went to Purdue University (Indiana, USA) and did a postdoc with Prof. Thomas Bein. His current research fields include organic catalysis with solids like zeolites and oxides, nanoparticle catalysis in ionic liquids, metal–organic frameworks applied to catalysis and adsorption, and advanced microscopy techniques for catalyst characterization. As of August 2015, Dirk De Vos is a member of the editorial board of Catalysis Science and Technology.

Catalysis

One of the core research areas of the De Vos groups is heterogeneous catalysis using porous solids. Starting from research on the activity of metal complexes in zeolites, our group has developed a strong tradition in catalysis over the past decade. We aim at being an innovative player in this field and thus in recent years the focus of our catalytic research has expanded from zeolites and mesoporous silicates to metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The De Vos group has done pioneering research in the applications of MOF as catalysts. At first their activity was explored and rationalized in terms of their structure. More recently, the focus of our work has turned to engineering the activity of MOFs. The use of functionalized linker molecules in UiO-66 allowed for the fine-tuning of strength of the Lewis acidic MOF, while synthesis modulation could successfully be applied to influence the number of active sites in this Zr-terephthalate. Other recent explorations allowed us to find efficient double metal cyanide catalysts for the hydroamination of alkenes and a structured Raney nickel hydrogenation catalyst. Last but not least is the expertise built up in the De Vos group on the microscopic visualization of single catalytic events. These techniques allowed the identification of catalytically active defect planes in single MOF crystals.

Adsorptions and Separations

 

The adsorption and separation of functional organic molecules are studied both in liquid and in vapour phase. The De Vos group is interested in mixtures comprising of alkylaromatics, phenolics, olefines, N/S-contaminated (Bio-)fuels, bio-oils, fermentation media, etc. Frequently studied adsorbent materials are zeolites and Metal-Organic Frameworks. Not only do we aim at achieving good separation factors, a thorough investigation of the mechanism behind the achieved separations is undertaken using complementary spectroscopic techniques like FTIR, NMR, RAMAN and SHG.

Shaping of metal-organic framework materials

   

Shaping is an enabling technology for the use of porous materials in nanotechnology. While these materials are usually synthesized and applied as powders for conventional bulk applications (e.g. catalysis and adsorptive separation), convenient synthesis as thin films and patterns is required for advanced applications (such as chemical sensing, integration on chips and photocatalysis). The De Vos group pioneered metal-organic framework (MOF) patterning concepts such as electrochemical deposition and microcontact printing and continues the development of novel shaping concepts that can open doors for new applications fields.

Metal nanoparticles

 

Metal nanoparticles and oligoatomic clusters comprise an interesting part of material science with interesting and specific properties. Our group studies the formation of metal nanoparticles, their catalytic behavior and other properties. For instance, nickel nanoparticles were formed in situ from Ni(II) salts in aliphatic phosphonium based ionic liquids. In this mixture, Ni0 atoms are stabilized by bipyridine. This complex acts as an active homogeneous catalyst for the amination of arylchlorides. Nickel nanoparticles were also used as racemization catalyst for primary amines. Next to nickel, also silver nanoparticles are studied. For instance, silver nanoparticles are stabilized on inert carrier materials (silica, alumina) and metal-organic frameworks through UV reduction. These particles are examined in catalytic chemoselective hydrogenation reactions. Selectivity is an extremely important issue in hydrogenations, where silver nanoparticles (approx. 1-5 nm) can exhibit better selectivities in comparison to the traditional Pt- or Pd-based hydrogenation catalysts. Next to silver nanoparticles, also oligo-atomic silver clusters are examined in our group. Because these clusters are in the sub-nanometric length scale, they exhibit molecular behavior, such as fluorescence, unlike bigger metallic nanoparticles. Hereto, our group also studies the stabilization of silver clusters in metal-organic frameworks and probes their (enhanced) fluorescent behavior.

Ionic liquids

Ionic liquids (ILs) are low temperature liquid salts and most ILs consist of imidazolium or phosphonium cations with (an)organic anions. In certain areas of catalysis and separation, the specific properties of ionic liquids can overcome known difficulties. Product separations can, for example, be facilitated by the formation of a biphasic organic/IL mixture at cooling down. ILs can also prolong nanoparticle stabilization which increases catalyst reusability. Furthermore ionic liquids can act as catalysts for dehydrochlorination reactions and the low vapor pressure of ILs is advantageous in ozone oxidations. A last part of our IL research is devoted to the compatibility between ILs and lignocellulosic biomass.

Green, catalytic transformations of renewable substrates

                       

Chemical transformations of naturally occurring, renewable substrates such as terpenes, α-amino acids and fatty acids to high-value fine chemicals have become a prominent part of our research activities. First, flavor-active compounds are synthetized by oxidation of hop-derived terpenes and sesquiterpenes and are applied to improve beer aromas. Furthermore, defunctionalization of α-amino acids is considered as a key step in the valorization of protein-rich waste streams, delivered by agro-industry. Although enzymes are able to remove the carboxylic acid (decarboxylation; -CO2) or the amine (deamination; -NH3) selectively, complementary chemocatalytic and even electrochemical strategies are designed to mimic the enzyme’s active site. On the one hand, organocatalytic decarboxylation of α-amino acids allows producing amines, which are precursors for polymers (cadaverine) or have bio-active properties (histamine, tyramine). On the other hand, oxidative decarboxylation of α-amino acids yields the corresponding nitriles; these products are excellent precursors for more complex N-functionalized components. The latter transformation can be accomplished either electrochemically or with a heterogeneous catalytic system with hydrogen peroxide as a terminal oxidant. Although CO2 is released in a decarboxylation step, attempts are made to close the carbon cycle. Therefore, other research projects deal with electrochemical reduction of CO2 and its concomitant incorporation into conjugated fatty acids. Moreover, CO2 can act as a reversible amine-protecting agent and can therefore be used to inverse the intrinsic selectivity of Michael additions and acylations.

Identification of molecules in archeological samples

Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is an indispensible technique in the qualitative characterization of organic mixtures. This technique is not only applied for the qualitative assessment of catalytic reactions, it is also used for sensitive and selective analyses of complex organic samples such as defunctionalized amino acid mixtures, oxidized sesquiterpene mixtures and archaeological organic remains. The identification of individual compounds in complex matrices relies on a profound knowledge and expertise in sample preparation techniques, derivatization protocols, mass spectral interpretation and mass spectrometric deconvolution techniques.

CO2 voor energie-opslag (EnOp)

7 CO2-technologieën, 7 CO2-prototypes

Wij produceren te veel CO2, en veroorzaken daarmee klimaatverandering door opwarming van de aarde. Duurzame energiebronnen zoals windenergie, zonneenergie, waterkracht, getijde-energie en geothermische energie zijn nodig om CO2-emissies terug te schroeven. Om de CO2-cyclus terug te sluiten is er meer nodig. Gebruik van CO2 als koolstofbron of als middel voor chemische energieopslag kan hier een oplossing bieden.

Energieopwekking uit duurzame bronnen gebeurt meestal op een kleinere schaal dan het opwekken van conventionele energie uit kolen of gas. Nadeel is dat de beschikbaarheid van energie uit duurzame bronnen variabel is. Het is ook wel eens windstil en de zon gaat elke avond onder. Om het energiesysteem toch flexibel, betrouwbaar en toegankelijk te houden is (chemische) energieopslag essentieel. In het door NanoHouse geïnitieerde project ‘CO2 voor Energieopslag’ (EnOp) worden systemen ontwikkeld voor energieopslag met CO2 en worden slimme materialen ontwikkeld op basis van CO2.
