The Martens group is part of the Centre for Surface Chemistry and Catalysis (COK), a diverse group of over 100 researchers involved in the development, characterization and application of nanostructured materials for sustainable catalysis, separation and controlled release.

The work of professor Martens extends from fundamental research to the development of practical solutions for today's societal problems. Topics include development of porous materials, heterogeneous catalysis, controlled release of pharmaceuticals, solar hydrogen production and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Several breakthroughs in the laboratory have led to the establishment of spin-off companies.
