Research group on livestock genetics

Genetics of pigs, sheep and horses

The group "livestock genetics" conducts research and is responsible for teaching in the field of breeding and genetics of livestock. If you are interested to do a master thesis or Phd, please contact us. We invite you to have a look on our job and research topics page.

We work in close collaboration with breeding organizations of agricultural livestock and associations of other livestock.

We are responsible for the estimation of breeding values in pigs, horses and sheep. Breeding values in pigs are computed for production traits and fertility traits. In horses, we compute the so called GSI which is an index for performance in show jumping. In sheep, breeding values for litter size and weight of lambs are estimated.

The first Vlaamse Fokkerijdag was held on 28/10/2009 and attracted more than 200 attendants. You can download the presentations here .

The group currently hosts the secretariat and website of the INTERSTALLION working group. This working group focusses on international research on (sport)horses and is supported by EAAP and ICAR.

Please also have a look at our pages devoted to summer eczema (sweet itch / insect bite hypersensitivity) in horses. We invite breeders of horses, affected with this disease, to contact us. Please go to SANROGEN.
