Estimated breeding values

General

Breeding values are computed for pigs, sheep and horses. Organisations deliver the performance data and the pedigrees and these are used as the input for ebv-computations. Results are returned to the respective organisations. For each computation a specific procedure and time schedule is followed.

Pigs

Pig ebv's are computed for the Flemish pigbook (Vlaams Varkensstamboek.) Computations involve production traits (average daily gain, feed intake and carcass quality) recorded in central testing stations and traits related to reproduction (number of piglets born alive, farrowing interval and number of piglets weaned). Ebv's for production traits are combined in an economic index called SMI (Selectie mesterij Index). EBV's for fertility traits are combined in the so-called IFI.

Horses

Breeding values for show jumping are computed for Warmblood horses. Pedigree information is obtained from two studbooks, (BWP and sBs). Performance data are results obtained in jumping competitions organized by LRV and KBRSF. The official list with stallion indexes can be downloaded from the links below. The background of the GSI (Index show jumping) was presented at the EAAP in Dublin (2007).

Small ruminants (sheep)

Breeding values for litter size and weight gain of lambs are computed in several breeds of sheep. Results are uploaded to the database of KHV (Kleine Herkauwers Vlaanderen). A note on the most recent computation of the index for prolificacy of 2009 can be found here (Vruchtbaarheidsindex 2009 voor schapen (run juni 2009 pdf, in dutch)

Previous reports on the computation of the index for prolificacy (litter size) can be found here:

In July 2008, fertility indexes were computed for Swifter, Zwartbles and Rouge de l'Ouest for the first time. Results have been uploaded to the KHV online database.
