ADMISSION
AND REGISTRATION
Prerequisites
(academic and linguistic)
Because the joint M.S. program is a multi-disciplinary
effort involving faculty from two campuses (Europe and the U.S.A.)
and students from around the world, the working language will be
English. Applicants that are not native English speakers must therefore
be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language through
a minimum score of 550 on the standard TOEFL test or equivalent
test.
Applicants preferably must have earned a
B.S. degree (U.S. model) or a 4- to
5-year license or ir. degree
(European model) in the exact or applied sciences. Equivalency of
other degrees will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Candidates
are expected to have a solid quantitative background, including
calculus and statistics.
Applicants meeting these basic diploma requirements
but not yet having acquired the necessary competence in the environmental,
biological, or earth science domains (either through course work
or professional experience) will have the option of using the first
semester's strengthening course to make up for these deficiencies.
Tuition fees for those registering through
the K.U.Leuven will be kept identical to those of Purdue University,
with two exceptions: (1) citizens of the European Union (education-tax
paying) will pay standard tuition fees; and (2) Third World
and Eastern European country citizens may apply for a tuition waiver
up to that standard fee. Waiver requests will be handled on
a case-by-case base with the understanding that not all can be granted.
“K.U.Leuven registrants” will pay K.U.Leuven fees for
the entire two years. “Purdue University registrants”
will pay Purdue University tuition fees for the entire two years.
Students from the two universities will exchange for one semester
within their two years and pay no additional academic fees to the
other institution.
Application
procedures
When applying for admission to the M.S. program,
candidates must send the following documents directly to the organizing
committees in their ‘home’ institution :
- a completed and signed application form;
- a certified true copy of your diploma/degree;
- a certified transcript of the candidate’s academic records;
- the results of the English language test (if applicable);
- a short personal history, including work experience.
Your complete file must be received by March
1st.
The organizing committees in both Leuven
and Purdue University will examine the applications and advice
whether or not a candidate can be admitted. If acceptable, the application
files will be transferred to the respective international relations
offices who will inform the candidates about their acceptance to
the M.S. program by sending them by April 15th the official admission
letter either from K.U.Leuven or from Purdue University.

Together with the admission letter, candidates
will receive further instructions on how to officially register
at K.U.Leuven. Detailed information about admission procedures at

Graduate Record Examination. |
| |
All
degree-seeking applicants are encouraged to take the Graduate
Record Examination (GRE); however, it is particularly important
that the GRE be taken if the applicant:
1. is seeking admission to a department that requests it;
2. wishes to be considered for certain fellowship programs;
3. feels that the previous academic record does not adequately
reflect the applicant’s ability;
4. received the baccalaureate degree from an unaccredited institution;
or
5. elects to use the verbal portion of the GRE Aptitude Test
as a means to satisfy any departmental written English proficiency
requirement. |
| -
Application Fee. |
| |
A
nonrefundable fee of $55 (drawn on U.S. funds through a U.S.
bank) is required for application for graduate study at all
of the Purdue campuses. It is university policy that no action
be taken on an application until the application fee is received.
The application fee is not required for applicants who have
a previous graduate academic record at Purdue. |
| -
How and When to Apply. |
| |
It
is recommended that applications be submitted via the Web. Applications for admission must
be made well enough in advance of the date the student wishes
to commence graduate studies so as to allow for the proper processing
of the application within the department and the Graduate School.
Transcripts, supporting letters, and any other materials required
by the department should be added to the application. All applicants
from outside the United States should apply at least six months
in advance and must begin their studies during the session for
which they were accepted. |
| -
Notification. |
| |
An
applicant is not officially admitted until he or she has received
notification from the dean of the Graduate School. Admission
is possible only when recommended by the department and approved
by the Graduate School. |
