Biophotonics

The functionality of biological systems is closely related to their organisation and physical properties at multiple spatial scales. Better understanding of this functionality requires monitoring of these properties and how they are affected by the multiscale processes and geometry of the system. NIR spectroscopy has high potential here, because it is rapid, non-destructive and highly sensitive to variations in structure and composition.


The Biophotonics group within the Division Mechatronics, Biostatistics and Sensors (MeBioS) of the Department of Biosystems at the K.U.Leuven, headed by Prof. Wouter Saeys, investigates the interaction of light with biological systems to develop innovative sensors for rapid and non-destructive characterisation and monitoring of biosystems. Current funding is provided by the Research foundation – Flanders (FWO), the Flemish agency for Innovation by Science and Technology (IWT),  the European Commission and the Interfaculty Council for Development Co-operation at K.U.Leuven (IRO).
