THIRD INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON SMART SENSORS IN LIVESTOCK MONITORING

10-11 September 2004

Leuven, Belgium

Linked to the AgEng 2004 conference

OBJECTIVES

Livestock-monitoring is a mandatory means for guaranteeing food safety and quality and for restoring consumers’ confidence by monitoring the production chain from farm to fork. It is also indispensable for achieving animal welfare and health as well as farm efficiency. The aim of this workshop is to focus on recent advances in on-line measuring and modeling of animal responses to bioenvironmental variations, and to promote interdisciplinary interaction between scientists and engineers from industry and academia. This workshop is the third continuation of the 2 previous conferences on this topic.

TOPICS

The topics of the workshop include:
  • On-line measurement of physiological variables
  • On-line measurement of animal behaviour
  • Animal responses to environmental stressors
  • Biosensors, sensing techniques
  • Infrared thermography on animals
  • Sound/image analysis of animals
  • Monitoring animal welfare
  • Modeling of animal responses and behaviour

Posters should conform to the following guidelines:

  • Written in English
  • Not exceeding A0 format (1.20m high and .90m wide)
  • The poster should be readable from a distance. Recommended font and minimum lettering height is Arial 24pt. Recommended minimum line thickness is 2 pt. The minimum height of graphs, pictures and tables should be 20cm or A4 size.
  • Figures and tables should have a brief legend. It is best in a graph to restrict oneself to 3 or 4 curves and in a table to about 4x4 items. In a graph different curves, particularly if they cross, should be distinguished by different colours or by different symbols for measuring points.
  • Use colours for emphasis and also symbols and schemes.
  • A summary should list the pertinent results and conclusions. A poster overloaded with information will rarely attract attention.
Accepted abstracts will be scheduled for a lecture of approximately 20 minutes, with an additional 10 minutes of discussion. As an alternative, there's the possibility of presenting a poster on one of the panels we provide. Please indicate your preference (lecture or poster) on your abstract.

All authors will receive a confirmation e-mail about the nature of the session (lecture or poster) and practical information before July 31 2004 (31/07/2004).

Important dates

  • July 1 2004: abstract submission
  • July 31 2004: session confirmation
  • September 10-11 2004: workshop
