We expect from all authors (oral and poster) to submit a full paper for participation in the workshop. Selected full papers will be published in a special journal issue (see Call for papers).

OBJECTIVES

The aim of SMART 2006 is to show exciting new advances in on-line monitoring of animal responses, to give "hands on" sessions and demonstrations, to start stronger worldwide interaction between scientists and industrial partners.
SMART 2006 is the fourth continuation of the 3 previous meetings in Silsoe (1999), Braunschweig (2002) and Leuven (2004).

TOPICS

The topics of the workshop include:
  • On-line measurement of physiological variables
  • On-line measurement of animal behaviour, animal welfare
  • Animal responses to environmental stressors
  • Biosensors, sensing techniques
  • Sound/image analysis of animals
  • Measuring of animal responses and behaviour in animal science
  • Hardware implementation by industrial partners

CALL FOR PAPERS

Important dates:

  • Abstract submission deadline: May 30 2006
  • Notification of acceptance to authors: July 10 2006
  • Full paper submission deadline: August 31 (all presentations, oral and poster!)
  • Registration deadline: July 20 2006

Submission of abstracts:

Abstracts should conform to the following guidelines:

  • Written in English
  • Not exceeding 2 A4 pages
  • Adding figures, tables, graphs, references is highly appreciated

Abstracts should be submitted by e-mail to daniel.berckmans@biw.kuleuven.be before May 30 2006.

Oral presentation:

Oral presentations will take 15 minutes for Powerpoint and 10 minutes for questions.
Authors who have their abstract accepted for oral presentation, will receive a personal invitation to submit a full paper for the workshop. This full paper will also be included in a special issue of the Computers and Electronics in Agriculture journal:

Poster presentation:

Instead of displaying a printed poster on stands, we give the opportunity to submit an electronic poster. This electronic poster consists of a Powerpoint slideshow with up to 2 slides. During the poster session, each author has about 5 minutes to present his/her poster to the audience.

Registration:

Registration is done by e-mail to marcella.guarino@unimi.it before July 20 2006. IMPORTANT: credit cards are NOT accepted at the workshop venue/hotel. Extra costs should be paid in cash.

LOCATION & DATE

The workshop will run from Friday 22 September to Saturday 23 September 2006.
The location is in Palazzo Feltrinelli, Via Castello 3; 25084 Gargnano (BRESCIA), Italy.

Hotel rooms will be reserved and paid by the workshop organisation.

How to get to the SMART workshop:

  • by plane: From Milano Malpensa or Linate, go to Milano's Central Railway Station ("Stazione Centrale") to take a train ora bus to Brescia. There are direct buses connecting these two airports to Milano Central Station ( from Malpensa there are shuttles and a train; from Linate take bus number 73 to the center or direct bus to the railway station). From Bergamo Orio al Serio, take the bus to the railway station in the city and, from there, a train to Brescia. In Brescia, leave the train station building and reach the SIA bus terminal from where you should take a bus to Gargnano (about 90’).
  • by train: to Brescia (www.trenitalia.it - English version available) then reach Gargnano by bus.
  • by bus: Milano - Brescia then get bus SIA Brescia - Gargnano (1 hour) the bus name is Gargnano (timetables on www.regione.lombardia.it - English version available) otherwise there’s a direct bus to Gargnano from Milano P.zza Castello (about 3 hours).
  • by car: Highway A4 Milano - Venezia,exit Brescia est, follow Salo until reaching Gargnano.
