Farming and Marketing Systems Research in Côte d'Ivoire: The IDESSA-K.U.Leuven Project (1995-1998)

During the period 1995–1998, the IDESSA-K.U.Leuven project (former CNRA "Institut des Savanes", Bouaké, Côte d’Ivoire – Katholieke Universiteit Leuven), entitled "Renforcement des études agro-économiques à l’IDESSA" and financed by the Vlaamse Interuniversitaire Raad (VL.I.R.), was active in Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), more specifically in Bouaké and in the Dikodougou region, south of Korhogo.

First, four villages in a radius of 50 km from the regional capital town Dikodougou were purposefully selected to represent the demographic (population pressure and genesis of the villages) and economic (presence of a cash crop) diversity of farming: Tapéré at 8 km northwest, Ouattaradougou at 50 km southeast, Farakoro at 30 km southwest, and Tiégana at 20 km northeast of Dikodougou. For each of the villages, a representative sample of farms was selected and surveyed during three agricultural seasons. For each farmer, field area, crop yields, input use, capital costs, family structure and daily labour allocation were surveyed. Moreover, numerous surveys and informal interviews were carried out on historical, sociological and economic aspects of farming in the Dikodougou region.

Secondly, surveys have been carried out on the markets of Bouaké, Abidjan, Korhogo, Daloa and Dikodougou to analyse the structure, conduct and performance of the marketing systems of yam, rice, groundnut and maize in Côte d'Ivoire. Price data have been collected and analysed to estimate the temporal and spatial price efficiency of the food marketing systems.
